New Update on Concord game

Sony has opted to withdraw the video game Concord less than two weeks after its release.

The multiplayer shooter, which launched on August 23 for PlayStation 5 and PC, struggled to gain momentum. Ryan Ellis, the game director at Firewalk Studios—acquired by Sony Interactive in 2023—announced the decision in a blog post on Tuesday.

“While some elements of the game resonated with players, we also recognize that other aspects and our initial launch did not meet our expectations,” Ellis wrote. “As a result, we have decided to take the game offline starting September 6, 2024, and will explore new options to better connect with our audience.”

The blog post also states that digital purchasers of the game will be eligible for a refund, while those who bought a physical disc version will need to follow the refund procedures of their respective retailers.

This development is a significant setback for Sony, especially after the viral success of their other major multiplayer release this year, Helldivers 2, which launched in February. While there were high hopes that Concord could match the sales and player engagement of Helldivers 2, the reception has been notably less enthusiastic.

Developed by Firewall Studios, Concord was rumored to have been in development for around eight years, making the decision to pull it surprising despite its lackluster performance. Designed to be a major franchise for Sony, the game had been receiving regular updates during its first two weeks, including new, fully motion-captured cinematic cutscenes added on a weekly basis. Although it bears a superficial resemblance to other multiplayer shooters like Over watch 2, Concord’s high-budget scope and ambitious plans for future content were unprecedented in its genre.
