The first trailer for A Minecraft Movie is a mix of both goofy and creepy

Minecraft Movie. there’s a new contender in the realm of bizarre live-action video game movies. Warner Bros. has just dropped the first teaser trailer for A Minecraft Movie, which blends real-life actors with a somewhat realistic CG version of Minecraft’s iconic blocky world. The result?

Despite the unsettling visuals, A Minecraft Movie promises to deliver some light-hearted family fun with its share of one-liners, epic battles, and Jack Black proudly declaring, “I am Steve!” Naturally, the film includes plenty of mining and crafting. Alongside Black, the cast features Jason Momma, Emma Myers, Danielle Brooks, Sebastian Eugene Hansen, and Jennifer Coolidge.

Directed by Jared Hess, known for Napoleon Dynamite, the film is set to hit North American theaters on April 4th. In today’s world, where video game adaptations are increasingly expected to be good, A Minecraft Movie will be vying for attention alongside The Super Mario Bros. Movie and the Sonic the Hedgehog trilogy. (Though, let’s not dwell on…)

I definitely expected a Minecraft movie to stay true to the game’s style, but instead, we get a strange blend of non-game CGI cubes and real-life actors. Jack Black appears as Steve, looking like he just walked off a TikTok video without a shave or haircut—essentially just Jack Black in Minecraft form. At least Jason Momoa committed to the role with a wig that makes him look a bit ridiculous.
